CAUTHE 2023 CONFERENCE AND SUSTAINABILITY

As you know, running a conference according to sustainability principles is a challenge, especially when it requires long distance air travel for delegates to attend.  We acknowledge this.  We are adopting a range of actions that will minimize negative impacts and promote positive impacts during the conference. We also have some suggestions for actions that you may wish to consider.

 What we are doing:

  • Using a heritage listed, centrally located conference venue
  • No conference bag (BYO)
  • No plastic single use water bottles (BYO water bottle)
  • Minimizing printed conference material
  • Using public transport to move delegates between venues
  • Encouraging delegates to use the recently opened airport-city rail link
  • Creating a list of recommended local bars, cafes and restaurants for delegates to sample and support local businesses

What you can do as a conference delegate:

  • Consider purchasing genuine/reliable carbon offsets for your travel to and from the conference
  • Use mass public transport, or your own feet, to get around Fremantle and the metropolitan area
  • Bring your own keep cup for purchasing hot/cold beverages
  • Visit the various attractions and shop at local businesses that offer local products

The Western Australian government has a plastics management strategy that includes banning a range of plastic items to reduce plastic pollution.  See https://www.wa.gov.au/service/environment/business-and-community-assistance/western-australias-plan-plastics
