NETWORKING SESSIONS

There is so much more to the 10th ICSWHMH than the 11 streams of content per day, there are also opportunities for delegates to come together for networking sessions for shared interest groups.

SOCIAL WORK IN HEALTH INEQUALITY NETWORK

(SWIHN)

We are an international group of around 800 social workers committed to addressing health inequality. We operate a listserv notifying members of relevant academic papers as they are published, and people can also share other health inequality events coming up. SWHIN has published a book, a special edition of the British Journal of Social Work and offered a webinar on Indigenous Health. We will be delighted to invite people to join us for lunch on Wednesday and to join the Network (no cost).

We will be looking for a new project so bring your ideas and you may well find international partners or initiate the next SWHIN project. We will also welcome a couple of new convenors. For academic members this can be good for your international profile, and good for everyone’s resume. Looking forward to meeting you in Melbourne.

Please let Rohena know if you will come to lunch rduncombe@csu.edu.au

Best wishes, your convenors, Bruce, Lana and Rohena

Date: Wednesday 20 November 2024

Time: 12:40 pm – 1:40 pm

Room: MR216 (Level 2 breakouts)

Convenors: Bruce Friedman, Lana Kaopua, Rohena Duncombe

AUSTRALIAN SOCIAL WORK HISTORY

- WHO CARES?

It is 95 years since professional social work was first taught in Australia (in Sydney) and 78 years since the formation of the Australian Association of Social Workers. Only two comprehensive histories of the profession have been written (Lawrence 1965 and Miller 2024). The 100th birthday of the profession will be in 5 years. A number of social workers are engaged in writing about their own careers, recording oral histories and caring for valuable historical documents. Is it time social workers interested in their history shared their ideas and their research?

We want to take advantage of this international conference to give historically minded social workers an opportunity to share their own historical projects and discuss whether a formal method of communicating social work history in Australia should be established.

Outcomes could be any of the following:

  • An email list of interested social workers
  • A national conference or meeting (live or zoom)
  • A journal issue devoted to social work history
  • A newsletter
  • A blog
  •  Facebook page
  • A formal history networking group on the lines of the British Social Work History Network
  • Or a decision that there is insufficient interest to go further

All are welcome to attend. The meeting will give all present an opportunity to briefly share any current historic projects.

If you want to present on a project it will help if you can advise the organizers in advance: please email jane.miller@bigpond.com IF you wish to attend and IF you have an idea or project you wish to present.

Date: Friday 22 November 2024

Time: 07:45 am – 8:45 am

Room: MR220 (Level 2 breakouts)

Convenors: Jane Miller and Jenny Rose
