Visit Old Melbourne Gaol

When the Old Melbourne Gaol was built in the mid-1800s, it dominated the Melbourne skyline as a symbol of authority. 

Between 1842 and its closure in 1929 the gaol was the scene of 133 hangings including Australia’s most infamous citizen, the bushranger Ned Kelly. Today you can visit the Old Melbourne Gaol to find out what life was like for the men and women who lived and died here all those years ago.

City Circle Tram

Travel on the City Circle Tram is free, so hop on and off as often as you like. The City Circle Tram service provides a free and convenient way to get around central Melbourne. Tourists, shoppers, office workers and families can use the City Circle Tram for travel to major attractions, shops and city events.

Tourists can spend all day on a City Circle Tram. Information leaflets, including an 'easy to understand' map of the city are available on board each tram.

To catch the City Circle Tram service (route number 35), simply board the tram at any of the specially marked stops on the route. You don't need a myki (ticket) if you're only travelling in the city's Free Tram Zone or on the City Circle Tram.

Timetable: Every 30 minutes - between 10am and 6pm from Sunday to Wednesday and between 10am and 9pm every Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

Aboriginal Melbourne Walk

The Eastern Kulin is an alliance of 5 Traditional Owner groups: the Wurundjeri, Bunurong, Dja Wurrung, Taungurung and Wadawurrung peoples. Eastern Kulin Country extends around Port Phillip and Western Port, up to the Great Dividing Range and through the Loddon and Goulburn River valleys. The groups are spiritually, culturally, politically and economically connected with a shared creator, Bunjil.

Melbourne Music Walk

Melbourne is widely known as one of the world’s great music cities, and has more live music venues per capita than any other city in the world. The city itself has featured in many music video clips for bands like AC/DC and The Cat Empire.

THINGS TO DO IN REGIONAL VICTORIA:

See the 12 Apostles

Witness the rugged splendour of the famous 12 Apostles, magnificent rock stacks that rise up majestically from the Southern Ocean on Victoria's dramatic coastline.

View the 12 Apostles at sunrise and sunset as they change from a brilliant sandy yellow colour under a full sun to appearing dark and foreboding in shadow.

The 12 Apostles are located 275 kilometres west of Melbourne – approximately a four-hour drive along the Great Ocean Road.

Visit the Yarra Valley Wine Region

The Yarra Valley’s unique landscape is a big part of what makes it one of the best wine regions on earth. See the Phillip Island Penguin Parade

Watch little penguins dash home across the sand at dusk at Phillip Island Nature Parks' Penguin Parade. Visit the Tarra Bulga National Park

With its lush gullies, giant mountain ash trees and tree ferns, Tarra Bulga National Park is one of only four major areas of cool temperate rainforest in the state.

Have lunch at the Tarra Bulga Picnic area, just off the Grand Ridge Road and try out one of the numerous walking tracks that emanate from the picnic areas. The rainforest is a haven for plants and wildlife. Discover a wide variety of birds including the pilotbird, yellow tailed black cockatoo, eastern whipbird, and currawongs. Visit Cactus Country
