Tourism, hospitality and events are experiencing a time of unprecedented transformation, shaped by globalisation, technological advancement and social change. These sectors are normally considered resilient and adaptable, despite the adverse impacts of global financial crises, the pressing urgency to address climate change and associated increase in natural disasters, and potential for political instability. However, the global public health shock presented by the COVID-19 pandemic has decimated the global tourism and hospitality sectors, with unprecedented impacts due to travel restrictions aimed at halting transmission of the virus in many countries around the world. The advent of the pandemic and subsequent implications for global mobility has generated substantial debate on the role of tourism, hospitality and events as an effective driver of sustainable development.
Subsequently, there has been a call for increased attention from governments, businesses and scholars to understand the extent of the impact of COVID-19 on the sustainability and resilience of the global tourism and hospitality sectors. These sectors have transformed to a ‘new normal’ in direct response to the COVID-19 outbreak; nonetheless, attention is beginning to be directed to the ‘next normal’ in tourism, hospitality and events with a unique opportunity to consider how these sectors can be utilised as a force for positive societal change. Consequently, CAUTHE 2022 is focused on shaping the ‘next normal’ in tourism, hospitality and events, with an emphasis on the role of research and education in generating constructive conversation designed to position these sectors as agents of sustainable development.
