Associate Professor Sarah Gardiner
Griffith University, Australia

Sarah Gardiner has over 25 years of experience in the tourism industry and has a PhD in marketing. She is the Deputy Director of the Griffith Institute for Tourism and an Associate Professor in Tourism at Griffith University. She is an expert in travel consumer behaviour, travel trends, experience design and innovation. She regularly delivers presentations, consultancies and training for government and industry in these areas and has published in leading tourism journals. She is often asked to provide expert comment to media on tourism issues and thought-leadership to government and industry.

Professor Emerita Pauline Sheldon

University of Hawai'i, United States

Pauline Sheldon is Professor Emerita, University of Hawai’i, School of Travel Industry Management where she also served as Dean.  She has published widely in the areas of economic demand modelling, information technology and tourism, and tourism education. Her current research areas include sustainable, regenerative and transformative tourism which overlap with her lifelong fascination with the awakening of human consciousness. She has worked with numerous international organizations, was the first woman President of the International Academy for the Study of Tourism, and co-founded the Tourism Education Futures Initiative (TEFI) and TRINET (Tourism Research Information Network).



Fatima Alloghani

Head of Expo Academy & Emiratisation, Expo 2020 Dubai, UAE

Fatima oversees the integration of UAE national talent at the Expo 2020 Dubai. She leads a portfolio of UAE nationals acquisition programmes, including the Expo Generation Programme (formerly known as ‘Expo Academy’). Fatima has more than 18 years of experience across diverse industries locally and internationally. Before joining Expo 2020, she worked for several leading companies, including Schlumberger, Dubai World, Etihad Airways, Total ABK Academy, IKEA and Abu Dhabi Terminals. Fatima is currently researching Expo 2020’s social impact within the context of UAE nationals’ engagement and building a legacy, as part of a doctorate with the University of Strathclyde Business School.



Assistant Professor Walanchalee Wattanacharoensil

Mahidol University International College, Thailand

Walanchalee Wattanacharoensil is Assistant Professor in the Tourism and Hospitality Management Division, Mahidol University International College, Thailand. Her research projects are mainly focused in the areas of current issues in tourism and hospitality, the interrelation between tourism and air transportation, and destination image. Walanchalee is committed to teaching and research practices. Her research outputs can be found in the reputable refereed journals and in the tourism industry magazine (e.g. TAT-Review by Tourism Authority of Thailand).

BSc in Economics. More than 25 years of experience in the tourism sector in the areas of strategy, market intelligence, tourism policy and innovation. Senior Director for Knowledge Management at Turismo de Portugal and Chairman of OECD Tourism Committee and European Travel Commission’s Market Intelligence Group. Tourism Expert in several workgroups from international organizations such as UNWTO, OECD, ETC and WEF. Invited Adjunct Professor at Nova SBE, Nova IMS and Universidad Europea das Canarias and Executive Director of NovaSBE’s Westmont Institute of Tourism and Hospitality.

Associate Professor Judith Mair
University of Queensland, Australia

Associate Professor Judith Mair is Discipline Leader of the Tourism Discipline Group at the UQ Business School, University of Queensland, Australia. Judith’s work aims to understand and enhance the positive impacts of tourism and events on the communities and societies which host them. She is working on a number of projects in fields including Olympic Games legacies, the links between events and social connectivity (including social capital, social cohesion and social justice) and assessing the potential impacts of climate change on the tourism and events sector. She is the author of over 55 academic papers in international peer reviewed journals, and has authored and/or edited five books, including the prestigious ‘Routledge Handbook of Festivals’. She also has a strong track record of media engagement and industry collaboration.

Daniel Gschwind

Chief Executive, Queensland Tourism Industry Council, Australia

Daniel Gschwind is the Chief Executive of Queensland Tourism Industry Council (QTIC). Daniel represents QTIC on various committees and advisory boards, including the Tourism Research Advisory Board, University of Queensland Industry Advisory Board, and the Griffith Institute for Tourism Advisory Board. He is the deputy chair of the Australian Tourism Industry Council and the chair of Australian Tourism Awards. He is also a member of Jobs Queensland. Daniel is an Adjunct Professor at the University of Queensland Business School. He is the Honorary Consul of Switzerland for Queensland. Daniel holds an honours degree in economics from the University of Queensland and has worked as a senior economist with Queensland Treasury. He has previously been involved in yacht charter operations in the Mediterranean and the Caribbean for ten years.



Professor Laura Misener

Western University, Canada

Dr. Laura Misener is a Professor in the School of Kinesiology at Western University (London, Ontario, Canada). Her research focuses on how sport and events can be use as instruments of social change, with an emphasis how sport for persons with a disability can positively impact community accessibility and social inclusion. Her research program is interdisciplinary in nature and pushes the traditional boundaries of her field to emphasize the importance of critical scholarship for innovation. She also serves as a research and policy advisor to a number of disability sport organizations focused on broadening the role of sport in positive social outcomes.



Mark Peters (OAM)

Major Events Gold Coast

Mark has long championed Australia's profile on the international stage, as a competitive sporting nation and host destination for major events. Mark served as the CEO of the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games Organising Company (GOLDOC), a position he accepted after leading the successful Bid Company. Before that, he was the CEO of the Australian Sports Commission for almost 10 years, President of the Australian Baseball Federation and Executive Member of the International Baseball Federation. His extensive portfolio of leadership and management experience covers tourism, events and organisational governance and structure. He has also represented and captained Australia in baseball. Mark was recently awarded a Medal of the Order of Australia in the Queen's Birthday 2020 Honours for his service to sports administration. In addition to his Major Events Gold Coast Board position Mark sits on a number of voluntary Boards including the Griffiths University Menzies Health Institute Queensland and Newlife Care Inc. Mark was recently appointed by the Gold Coast City Council as a Strategic Advisor on how best to utilise opportunities for the City created by major events.



Riley Day

Student Athlete, Griffith University, Australia

Riley Day is a 200m sprinter that has represented Australia at the Olympics, World Championships, and the Commonwealth Games. Riley’s goal as an athlete is to medal at these respective major championships and be an influence to young kids to get out there and have a go. Whilst she is not training, she is studying a Bachelor of Business majoring in sports management. She is also a proud ambassador for RSPCA and Woolworths supermarkets.
